Ghost of Yotei is Sucker Punch Productions at their absolute best. Set against the backdrop of Hokkaido's volcanic landscapes and Ainu cultural territories in 1603, it tells the story of Atsu — a wandering swordswoman hunting the criminals who destroyed her family.

What Works

Everything. The combat system refines Tsushima's already excellent foundation with more fluid parry windows, a deeper stance system that now includes five distinct fighting styles (up from four), and environmental kills that feel genuinely earned rather than scripted.

The world is Sucker Punch's most beautiful to date. Hokkaido's snow-covered landscapes, hot spring valleys, and coastal fishing villages all feel distinct in a way that Tsushima's regions sometimes didn't.

Atsu as Protagonist

Jin Sakai was an excellent lead. Atsu is better. Her motivation is personal rather than political, which grounds the narrative in a way that makes every story beat feel consequential. The voice performance (Japanese dub, English subtitles) is award-worthy.

What Could Be Better

The open world structure remains conservative. The side quests, while well-written, follow a familiar template. And the final act rushes toward a conclusion that needed another chapter to breathe.

Verdict

Ghost of Yotei is essential. If you loved Tsushima, this is everything you wanted and more. If you didn't play Tsushima, this is the better entry point.
